I can't remember when I last changed my aquarium water

I can never remember when I last changed the water in my aquarium. Was it last Saturday, or the one before? It always feels recent, and then it turns out it has been much longer.

This is the tank: an angelfish, a few mollies, a big piece of driftwood and a lot of live plants. It is not a hard tank to keep. It mostly needs one thing from me, regular water changes, and that is exactly the thing I keep losing track of.

Why it is so easy to forget

The tank does not tell you when it is due. The water looks clear and the fish look happy for a long time after a change should have happened. There is no moment that reminds me, like an empty fridge or a full bin.

A water change is also not a daily habit. It happens every week or two, which is the worst rhythm for memory. Daily things become automatic, and monthly things go in the calendar. Something in between just blurs: every weekend looks the same, so "last weekend" could mean any of them.

What I tried before

I tried writing the date in a notes app, and I tried a paper list next to the tank. Both worked for a few weeks. Then one busy day I did the water change but skipped writing it down, and after that I could not trust the list anym
ore. A record with gaps is almost worse than no record, because it looks like an answer when it is not.

The problem was never the water change itself. It was that writing it down took more effort than I was willing to spend right after carrying buckets around.

Any routine app will do

What I needed was simple: somewhere to record that I did something, with the date, that is quick enough to use every single time. Any habit tracker or routine app can do that. A shared calendar or a spreadsheet would work too, as long as you actually keep it up.

If you are looking for one, the things that mattered to me were:

  • Logging has to take seconds, or I will skip it on busy days.
  • It has to show the history of one task on its own, so "when did I last do it?" is one look.
  • It should let me add a past date when I forget to log on the day.
  • A short note per entry is a bonus, for things like filter cleaning.

I chose EasyRoutine because logging there can be just a photo, and that fits the moment right after a water change better than typing.

How I keep track now

Now I log every water change in it. I have one activity called "Water change", with a photo of my water change bucket and siphon hose as its picture. When I finish, I snap the bucket and hose with my phone and the app recognizes the activity and logs it. My hands are usually still wet at that point, so a single photo is about all the effort I will put in, and that turns out to be enough.

Sometimes I add a short note: how much water I changed, that I also cleaned the filter, or that I trimmed the plants. If I forget to log on the day, I add it to that day later, so the record stays complete.

What changed

When I start wondering again, I tap the activity and the calendar shows every water change. The last entry is the answer, so I no longer have to guess. I can also see the gaps: weeks where I let it slide show up as empty space, which is a more honest reminder than my memory ever was.

The notes turned out to be useful too. I can look back and see when I last cleaned the filter, which I would otherwise forget even more easily than the water changes.

The fish do not care how I keep track, of course. But the tank has been more stable since I stopped guessing, and I no longer get that small moment of doubt every Saturday morning.
